Matt Rutherford was the first person in history to complete a non-stop, single-handed voyage around North and South America. During the first leg of his trek, Rutherford broke a record by solo sailing the smallest boat in history through the Northwest Passage. He completed this record-breaking journey of 27,077 miles in 309 days.
Back home in Annapolis, Matt immediately began creating the Ocean Research Project, a non-profit organisation which helps scientists better understand the problems facing our seas. He believes that no one person can do everything but everyone can do something. Ocean Research Project relies on grants and donations. If you think you can help, please click here.
His battle to conquer some of the world’s most treacherous seas in a 27’ sailing boat called St. Brendan is the subject of the documentary film Red Dot on the Ocean. Scroll down the page to see the trailer.
Every year, Matt and the crew of his vessel, The Ault, spend a great deal of time in the arctic Circle, north of the 77th parallel, gathering data for NASA. For Boat Radio, Matt sends a weekly despatch in which he details the events of the previous seven days. Listen in awe as Matt and his crew tackle icebergs, Arctic storms, food shortages, financial woes and, in one particular episode, life-threatening mishaps and bungling. This is pioneering stuff.
